How to Disable Your Dial-up Modem's Dialing Sounds

The distinctive squeal of the modem as it dials out to a remote server is recognizable to anyone who has used or, heavens forbid, still uses dial-up Internet service. Beep beep...beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep, click, click-click, click-click-click, eu-euu-euuu-uuuuuu euuu-uuuuuu. Luckily, you can disable the sounds that your PC's modem makes. Here's how.

Instructions

    Disable Your Dial-up Modem's Dialing Sounds

  1. Step 1

    Access your computer's modem settings. Click on the Start button, and navigate to your Control Panel.

    Double click the Phone and Modem icon
    Double click the Phone and Modem icon

    Open the Control Panel. In the menu, locate the icon for the Phone and Modem Options. Double click the icon. Click on the Modem tab. This will bring up a list of all the modems that connect to your computer. Click on the particular modem that connects you to the Internet.

    Click on the properties button that is located toward the bottom of the window. In the pop-up window that opens, click on the Modem tab.

    Scroll the speaker knob to the left

    Locate the option labeled Speaker Volume. Click down on the knob and scroll it to the left all the way to the end. This will disable the modems speaker.

  3. Step 5

    Click OK when you are done. Click OK in the Phone and Modem screen. This closes all the windows, and the modem's dialing sounds are now disabled.

    Click your start button and Start and navigate to your Control Panel on the menu.

    Open the Control Panel and locate the icon for the Phone and Modem Options. Double click the icon. Click on the Modem tab. This will bring up a list of all the modems that connect to your computer. Click on the particular modem that connects you to the Internet.

  7. Step 3

    Click on the properties button that is located toward the bottom of the window. In the pop-up window that opens, click on the Advanced tab.

    Enter the code: ATM0 to eliminate all sounds
    Enter the code: ATM0 to eliminate all sounds

    Locate the text field that's labeled Extra initialization commands. Type in the relevant code from these codes below.
    Code Description
    *ATM0: to eliminate all sounds
    *ATM1: to keep the sound on until the modem detects a remote carrier
    *ATM2: to always have the sound on, even after you connect.
    *ATM3: to eliminate the dialing sounds, but let the speaker produce sounds until it connects with the server.

  9. Step 5

    Click on OK once you have entered the desired code. Your modem will now be silent.
